Foster Cover book cover design

Before: This is a hilarious book with illustrations by Johnny Hart, creator of the world-famous comic strips “B.C.” and “The Wizard of Id”, but does this look like humor? Black and red, used together, can evoke danger, action, mystery and romance. This cover does not break this rule, but rather dies by it.

After: Hart’s cartoon presents the book’s theme well so we used it all, including his signature. I deferentially colored it, remembering how I used to copy “B.C.” for hours when I was a kid. Such a pleasure to work with Johnny Hart, one of my heroes! The light yellow is warm and friendly. A border enhances dignity. The cross in the title carries the theme, so we kept it.
